Week 9 assignment # 3

QRI-5 is a comprehensive assessment tool that is given to individual students from kindergarten through 12th grade.  It measures a few things to understand how students identify different words and comprehend different texts. It uses word list and texts to assess student’s abilities. Teachers performing QRI-5 can see which level their student is at, independent, instructional, or frustration.

DIBELS- is an assessment tool which measures children’s early literacy skills from K- 6th grade. It consists of short assessments that are given regularly to monitor progress in student’s development in literacy and reading skills and aligns with many of the common core standards. DIBELS assesses different aspects of reading such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. Students are screened about 3 times a year using benchmark assessment to see if they are at grade level, and if intervention is necessary. DIBELS helps teachers see which areas to focus on in instruction so that the student will be on par with future learning.

DIBELS and QRI-5 are both used to assess student’s literacy skills. They both give the teacher an idea where the student is up to in reading skills, and allow to give the necessary instruction according to the student’s needs. There are some differences, firstly QRI-5 is used for students from K- 12th grade, on the other hand DIBELS are only used up to 6th grade. DIBELS are short assessments, while QRI-5 does not have such small-time constraints. DIBELS are specific, they address the five big ideas in literacy, and QRI-5 is a broader assessment.

Both of these assessments are there to provide instruction and the necessary intervention. Both assessments are very important, they allow teachers to determine what level the student is. Teachers can then plan instruction to target the needs of each individual student.
