Introduction to QRI-5

What is QRI-5? QRI-5 is a informal reading inventory designed for students from pre-k through 12th grade used to evaluate students reading level. Each student is individually assessed in reading and comprehension. It contains numerous passages and graded word list that can be used in various ways to evaluate students in different situations. What is the purpose of using QRI-5? The purpose of using QRI-5  is to identify students reading level. Additionally, it helps teachers see in which area their students are struggling, and to provide necessary instruction based on the assessment that was done. Have you seen similar activities like QRI-5? Yes, I am familiar with running records and miscue analysis. What is your impression of QRI-5? I think that it is an excellent tool that can be really helpful for all ages and teachers. I like the idea that a teacher can see where her students are up to in various areas and different reading issues that a child can have. I would love to implemen...

Week 3 assignment # 2

Reading through the fourth grade sample lesson plan showed me that teachers can create exciting, engaging, and motivating lessons that align with the Common Core state standards, and even more so addresses the needs and abilities of each student in the class. As a future educator, it is our role to think creatively and use the standards to engage and teach students  to the best of their abilities. Teachers can use running records, QRI-5, or informal assessments to assess students reading levels. Teachers should take note of students participations in discussions and lessons. This would help the teacher to know if the child is lagging behind, or is on the same level as the rest of the students in the class.

Week 2 assignment # 3

I have gained so much insight, ideas, and strategies to implement in my teaching after viewing the 10 mini videos. Parents play a very important role with young children’s literacy skills from a very young age. When parents read to their children they transmit a love of reading and even more promote print and language awareness. A child can also learn to distinguish between sounds, the more a parent interacts with his child. Parents can also play word games which helps develop phonemic awareness. A rich knowledge of words helps build fluency. Word web is a great way to teach students that one word can have many different meanings. Thus, this helps expand student’s vocabulary. Spelling can sometimes be very hard and boring, so teachers should not introduce spelling to students like memorizing words.   Spelling should be taught with rules and be made a lot of fun, so students understand the structure of the words.     I really liked the Semantic Gradient it is great ...

Self introduction

Click here to view my voki: http://tinyurl.com/ybzt4oru Hello everyone, my name is Sora Ilowitz and I hope that you all had a wonderful summer! I grew up and attended all my years of school in Brooklyn NY, and I currently reside in Israel. I am currently in my third semester pursuing a master’s degree in education. I do not work as of now, but I have worked in the past in an early childhood classroom in Bais Yaakov. If I would to write a book about myself I would probably name it “Life is out of my control”, as I am growing older I see how much that whatever happens in my life is not in my control. A good joke that I heard and like, a teacher asked a student for his homework, the student answered I don’t have it the teacher asked what happened to it? The student answered that I made it into a paper airplane and it got hijacked :)! I am familiar with the term “new literacies”, and teaching language arts from a previous semester. I am looking forward to learning about both of thes...
