Week 2 assignment # 3

I have gained so much insight, ideas, and strategies to implement in my teaching after viewing the 10 mini videos. Parents play a very important role with young children’s literacy skills from a very young age. When parents read to their children they transmit a love of reading and even more promote print and language awareness. A child can also learn to distinguish between sounds, the more a parent interacts with his child. Parents can also play word games which helps develop phonemic awareness. A rich knowledge of words helps build fluency. Word web is a great way to teach students that one word can have many different meanings. Thus, this helps expand student’s vocabulary.

Spelling can sometimes be very hard and boring, so teachers should not introduce spelling to students like memorizing words.  Spelling should be taught with rules and be made a lot of fun, so students understand the structure of the words.   I really liked the Semantic Gradient it is great for teaching vocabulary and to help students extend their knowledge of words. I also really liked the jigsaw strategy, it is a cooperative activity which supports comprehension, and also allows students to become active learners. I also realized the importance of ongoing assessment, it ensures that students don’t fall behind and get the appropriate assistance.
